Milan, the Italian capital of fashion and design, is also a vibrant cultural and musical hub, spanning from opera to pop music. In recent decades, jazz has had a significant impact on the Milanese music scene, transforming the city into an international reference point for enthusiasts. The Milan Jazz Festival, now in its ninth edition, showcases the musical universe of jazz in all its forms: its history, its present, its future.
Jazz Mi 2024
From October 17 to November 13, a four week program and over one hundred concerts in theaters, clubs, and other venues throughout Milan. Additionally, there will be films, books, exhibitions, special events, artist meetings, and workshops. This is the program for the ninth edition of JAZZMI, which is one of the largest musical events in Europe. The two main locations will be the Triennale Milano and the Blue Note. The festival will also involve many other places in the city, from the center to the suburbs.
Also returning this year to JazzMi is the JAM THE FUTURE project, the contest for under 35 bands that will take place at the Volvo Studio Milano over two evenings in September. The theme of this new edition is “Music: the voice of the planet, the soul of the world.”

Jazz in Italy
Italians love jazz music, and a quick web search will show how many jazz events take place across the peninsula. Umbria Jazz is the most important Italian festival and one of the most renowned internationally, mainly held in Perugia. Rome, Turin, Bologna, Venice, and Siena also celebrate this musical genre. Northern Sardinia also hosts the enchanting Musica sulle Bocche, International Jazz Festival, where tradition and innovation meet the rhythm of jazz.

Jazz Music in Milan: My Recommendations
This festival will be the opportunity for me to finally listen to artists like Pat Metheny live. He will be performing solo pieces from his new album “MoonDial” and some tracks from “Dream Box” on November 2 at Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber.
If you’re looking to discover some Italian jazz musicians, I recommend Danilo Rea. “Opera in Jazz” will be performed at the Triennale Theater on November 9.
I was also enchanted by the melodies of Bill Laurance & Michael League. With their instruments, they transport us to distant places filled with beauty, peace, and energy. They will be performing on November 5 at the Teatro della Triennale.
